Memento Mori team riders Tom Knight and Isaac Mundy to test Sennheisers sports line range on behalf of www.god-father.co.uk & Sennheiser.
We have held discussions with Russell Brooking owner of GF on how to test the sports line range, after speaking to Tom Knight his biggest complaint regarding earphones were they slip out during training, cuasing upset too training methods.
Memento Moris team along with God Fathers hope to push how earphones are tested in non practical enviroments.

Pearce Cycles Round 5 |

|
We arrived in a field full of dew in the early hours of Saturday morning to set up camp for the 5th round of the Pearce Cycles DH series at Bucknell. Whilst setting up camp my team mate Jamie came over for a chat and then we went to check out the course. Walking up the through the field and into the first woods it looked nice and flowy which would be fun to ride. However when entering the first wooded section

we were greeted by a tall but short step down which looked challenging. Walking on up from there the course got rooty and twisty making it a bit more technical, this then carried on into the next section of woods and out into the open. Once into the open you were faced with a series of stumps and berms of which there was one obvious fast line which was to cut the corners and ride over the stumps. Up from here was a big table and a massive fly off jump which was the highlight of every run I did. Coming into the fly off was a set of jumps making the top section look very fun and nice to ride and I couldn’t wait to get on it. Practice went well and I did some track sectioning with my team mate Jamie and we were getting up to pace nicely for Sunday. After 5 runs and a few crashes I decided to call it a day and get some rest for Sunday. During the evening me and my dad headed out to a local pub for some grub. I had a very nice rotisserie chicken and I was so busy eating it I didn’t notice what my dad had. After some very nice meals we headed back to the tent and hit the sack.
Waking up in the morning I felt fresh and ready to head up for some early morning practice sessions. After two semi dialled runs I rested and waited for my race run. Up on the start line I felt cool and just wanted to go racing. My run went good. I stayed on the bike but I did have some very sketchy moments where I nearly went down but I held them. I came into the finishing field and crossed the line in second place behind Jamie who had pulled out an amazing 7 seconds on me. After watching the rest of the field come down I was knocked into 7th place which wasn’t too good so I was eager for another run.
My second run went better and I came down 3 seconds faster again placing me in second behind Jamie’s amazing first run time. However as the remaining 5 riders came down I was knocked down two places and Jamie lost his lead by less than one second so we ended up 4th and 2nd which I didn’t think was a bad result for the team. |

An incredible day, emotions were in the stratosphere and everybody is just so happy that Peaty has at last got what he has been chasing for so many years. Congratulations came from all over the world, even Nico Vouilloz sent Peaty a text to say 'well done'. From now on any time Steve gets asked 'how many times have you been 2nd at the Worlds?' he won't have to hesitate. The answer will be '4 times, then I won the bloody thing!'.

Astrix Havoc by Jamie Maller |

The new Astrix Havoc Downhill race bike is awesome. Previously before my Astrix I owned an Iron horse Sunday world cup, which I thought, was a great bike that worked really well. As soon as I got on the Astrix the length, geometry and suspension movement all felt perfect to me. I took it for a spin up the woods and I just started enjoying the bike more and more. It feels really stable due to its long wheelbase, which helps the bike feel fast. It has a responsive rear end and works really well with the TFtuned Boss Stoy shock. The geometry makes racing downhill tracks just feel easier, super smooth and controllable.
Downside to the frame is a slightly higher BB than I would like, this makes me ride a little too much over the front of the bike, which is not so good on the steep hills. The long wheelbase makes it slightly tricky on really tight corners, but I guess its just practicing on the bike to make it work. The weight of the frame feels heavy, however I am not sure on how heavy it actually is.
Overall I don’t really see why this bike shouldn’t be capable of winning world cups, as it is my favourite downhill bike so far. I feel really comfortable on the bike, which makes me ride better, it’s a good all round Downhill bike and I think just a few more tweaks and it would feel great.
Cheers Jamie
Thanks too Chris and Team Memento Mori for supplying me with this amazing downhill frame. |

Welsh Champs by Jamie Maller |

|

The Welsh champs on the 30th of August 09 was at Caersws and was a new built track, which turned out to be pretty good. The weather held up for racing, until podiums came and it poured down with rain. The event was organized by Don Skene Cycles and I thought they did well considering they don’t often organize events, however the course was not tapped well.
My brother and I skipped Saturday practice and turned up on Saturday afternoon, so I was on a slight disadvantage in missing a days riding. Got up bright and early Sunday to bang out as many runs as possible in the end I got 3 runs and got the track pretty dialled, my brother had some unfortunate luck and bent his handlebars causing him to have no practice. I set of for my first run and found myself in the hot seat with the fastest time of 1:54.01, but no later to find out the my run had been DQ for taking a few poles out in the bottom field. Second race run I had the pressure on to get a good race time, I came down with a 1:55.6 slightly slower, unfortunately this was not enough for 1st place as Joel Moore put in a time of 1:54.2.
Overall was a little annoyed that having my 1st race run DQ cost me the win, however 2nd place is not all that bad as I gained a new pair of 661 knee pads.
Cheers Jamie maller

NPS 4X Rd6-PORC |
11.08.2009 // 16:09 |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Last weekend everyone headed down (or across if you're a Redhill boy) to Penshurst, Kent, for round 6 of the NPS 4X and a 661 mini DH, here's how I got on.
The mini DH went pretty good for me, I set an okay time in my first run and slotted into third, I felt like I was on a really good time on my second run then coming into the last bit of the course I cocked up a little drop into a right hander and nearly went over the bars into a tree, managed to save it but I lost a bit of time and stayed in third in my category, over 2 seconds back on Brandon Love who won. I beat my mates though which was the main objective obviously.
This being the penultimate 4X round I was looking to get some decent points going into Chicksands, I went down to PORC the week before to check out the track and was pretty happy with it, although despite all the corners it felt there still wasn't going to be much passing because you kept your speed through most of them, another track decided on the gate then!
In my first moto I lined up next to Alex Metcalfe. As Mr. Jared Graves himself says "I prefer to get pushed in the early rounds otherwise I'm just cruising when I get to the final and end up sleeping on the gate", well I ended up sleeping on the first corner and let Alex up the inside. I had a quick look round the side of him on the second corner but ended up clipping a tree so spent most of that run learning how to brake with a bent lever and making sure my finger was ok. Coming up to the road gap I thought I should probably try and make a pass so I cranked hard on landing and got up level with Alex by the grass corner, went round the outside and I'm not sure what happened then but there was some contact and suddenly he wasn't there.
I stayed up to win that moto and won the next three too so came through motos with max points.
Youth didn't have semi finals, we normally do but this time I think because of the low entry numbers we went straight to A and B finals, the A final was me, Matt Jones, his brother Jono and James Oliver. James has ridden really consistently all year, he's lying in third overall and the Joneses are amazing bike handlers never to be counted out so it stood to be a good final.
Me and Jono got the gate, we both went tight round the first corner and came out of it elbow to elbow, I just managed to get ahead coming down to the bridge tabletop and got my crank on down the hill to get a bit of a lead and keep it to the finish, James rode smooth all day and was rewarded with his highest place of the year in second leaving the Joneses to fight it out for third and fourth, Matt came out on top to fill the last podium place and Jono was pretty disappointed with fourth he was quick all day and possibly deserved better.
After that round I'm 27 points up on Metcalfe going into Chicksands, I get on pretty well with that track so am looking forward to hopefully wrapping up the series under the Bedfordshire pines.
Cheers to Nigel, Corin and Jenny for turning up clutching goodies both of the kit and bike parts variety, they will be put to good use |

National Champs DH - Report Tom Knight |

|
|

After one of the longest drives I have ever had up to Innerleithen we arrived in the dark and the rain to put our tent up for the night. Once this had been done I decided to go and have a quick sneak peak at the track before practice the next day. Walking the course , it was steep and rocky at the bottom but became really flat and fast when you hit the half way point. Once I had reached the half way point I decided not to go to the top of the track because it was getting too dark to see so I started the long descent back down to base camp and hit the hay.
The next morning we were up early to change tyres for morning practice as it had rained over night making it quite muddy and slippery. The first few practice runs were going OK and I was gradually building up speed. As the end of practice was nearing the course was drying out really fast so I changed to high rollers and gave them a shot on my last few runs. Once practice was over we washed my bike, packed the car and headed into town for some food. Unfortunately there was some festival going on meaning you couldn't park and drive anywhere so I went on a foot based hunt to get some grub instead. Trying to get through the crowds to get to the chippy was unbelievably hard due to the local band playing in the town centre. After eating our traditional sausage and chips we decided to call it a day and go to sleep.
The next day I woke up nice and early to ensure I was on the first uplift so I could get two runs in. These two runs I spent training with my team mate Jamie Maller which was cool. After the practice runs and a short refuel Jamie and I headed up to do our seeding runs. The seeding runs went OK and I came down with a time of 3.20 and Jamie just came in with a slightly faster time of 3.19 but he had a bit of a mishap with a tree somewhere on the way down.
After seeding runs I changed my tyres and headed up or my main run. My race runs were going better and I thought I was carrying a lot more speed. I came into the last section and thought I would push a bit harder and that didn't really work out as I went straight into a tree. I got up and headed across the line with a time 7 seconds slower. However Jamie went quite a bit faster and did a 3.13 which was pretty good I think, so nice one bro. | |

|
Thought I should post a hello message so here's what I could think of while actually listening to England fail at sticking it to the Aussies:
I'm really excited to be joining Memento Mori and riding for the team for the remainder of the year and next year's season, I hope I can be an asset to the team and contribute to MM's image in the 4X world, loads of thanks to my family for helping me get this far, without my dad getting creative with some lock-tite, tin foil and zip ties I wouldn't have had a bike for the national champs, luckily it worked
I'm looking forward to the next two rounds of the NPS 4X, I haven't been to PORC before and new tracks are always fun so I can't wait for that...
And Bopara just dollied up a catch so my attention is segueing back to the cricket, see you all at PORC. |

Isaac in action winning this years National Champs coverage by DIRTMAG
In our quest to recruit the best up and coming talent with in the 4x scene, we at Memento Mori have been looking closely at a number of riders throughout this season.
After approaching Isaac during motos at Redhill we knew he was the right candidate. Isaacs’s performance this year has been nothing but consistent backing this up with a National Championship title. Looking at the table in the NPS4X season Isaac looks to have this all but won.
Prime Team Memento Sponsor, Corin from DfourB, added “We are constantly looking for the right riders to promote our key brands, and seeing how Isaac has improved his consistency this year, I was delighted when Nigel called me this evening to confirm his signing. He will be a great addition to the strength of Team MM”.
I would also like to personally thank Gareth Mundy, and welcome Isaac Mundy to Memento Mori Race Team for remainder of the 2009 and the 2010 season.
Good luck Isaac. Nigel Jones Manager Memento Mori Race team.. |

Return of the Jedi I mean Jamie |

|
As some of you may have known, Jamie Maller our downhill rider and current national champion, came off his bike four months ago and broke his thighbone in two places.
As team manager and owner of Memento Mori, I took the decision with Rob Maller, (Jamie’s father) that we would’nt be rushing Jamie back. Ok that seemed really easy four months ago. Each day Jamie was getting stronger and more frustrated, looking at the pre-season results in various series Jamie was flying. So to have this happen just before the NPS and our planned world cup stages was not only heart wrenching for Jamie, but for the team and sponsors of Jamie’s personal race bike.
I have to say Jamie’s return to racing this Sunday was nerve racking. As a manager my biggest worry was is this too soon? How will he feel? Is the confidence back? Will Jamie ever recover? All these thoughts Jamie didn’t know I had, but all those worries and thoughts have since settled down. Jamie’s first race back four months ago proved to me how much of a racer Jamie is, not only physically but also mentally.
Maller’s return saw him come in 10th !! I was not expecting it nor were our sponsors.
Team Memento Mori would like to congratulate Jamie on how he dealt with his killer blow and how professional he has been regarding Team Memento Mori.
Its great having you back Jamie from the whole of the Memento Mori team.
I would like to also add, Tom Knight, our 4x rider came in 9th, so well done Tom.

Tom Knight On National champs |

Last weekend saw the NPS4X circus headed to Red Hill Extreme for RD5 and the National 4X Champs. On the Saturday was the NPS round and we arrived early in the morning to sign on and hit the hill for some practice. This went OK with the track running really fast and drifty because it was dry and dusty. Once practice was over we had the normal 30min/1hr break before we got down to business. My four motos went good getting enough points to allow me into the quarter finals. The quarter finals went well to and I headed through into the semis. My semi final was one of the hardest I have ever had with Max Lenthal and Scott Roberts to race against it was going to be a challenge to get through. Out the gate Max got the snap and I was sitting in second down the first straight and into the first corner. However on the second straight I cased a jump and lost all my speed allowing Scott to catch me up, we headed into the next corner level pegging as he took the low line and I took the high. Fortunately I came out with more speed and came out ahead. I managed to hold 2nd position as we came across the line meaning I would head into the final. Out of the gate I was slightly behind which was bad news as I had chosen lane one hoping I would be able to push out and grab my lane. As it happened this choice worked against me and I was pushed by the other three off the side of the first jump. Because of this I was heading for the flag I had to slow down and turn back on course which wasn't that easy as Elliott Simmons had crashed right next to me. Once I had got back on track and had clipped back in the others where too far ahead to catch so it was a follow them down job to claim 3rd place on the day which wasn't too good. However from the day came some good news for MM as Liam rode an excellent ride to take his 2nd victory of the year .
| The next day was the National Champs, After having practiced the day before I didn’t do much practice to save my energy for the race however I did still so some gate practice. Before racing started the senior category had to do a seeding run against the clock to position them for their knock out heats. Liam did really well on his run coming across the line to post the 4th fastest time and it stayed that way. After the seeding runs were over it was straight into the 4 moto format for all the other categories. My motos went OK allowing me to get through to the quarter final where it all went wrong. Before the quarters some rain had fallen on the course and made it slightly more slippery than I thought. I was leading the pack coming into the penultimate corner, I was coming in too fast and my front wheel slid and slid across the floor. As soon as I started to get up of the floor Josh West who was in second crashed into me and Jake Ward crashed into him. The guy in 4th Sean Herman went straight to the front and was through to the semis, meanwhile Jake and I were having a bit of a running race to cross the line in second. As we ran around the last corner Jake fell over again and I got my bike caught in the flag and I couldn’t get it out without pulling the flag out of the ground quick enough so Jake boosted across the line and into the semis so I had no choice but to call it day. I got changed ready to watch the finals and the champions be crowned when the heavens opened again and drenched the course making it really treacherous and difficult to ride. A few of the Yeti UK lads and I then decided to run and hide in someone’s van to watch the finals so we didn’t get soaked. The rain meant we got to see some of the best finals ever, because as riders battled the conditions there were plenty of spills and crashes and some simply awesome riding from those who managed to stay on all the way to the finish. Once the rain had stopped we put the bike on the car and headed home. | |

|
A couple of weeks back were rounds two and three of this years NPS4X series down at The Edge near Bridgenorth. Both days were really sunny and hot which was really surprising due to the forecast earlier in the week. This made the track really dry and dusty. I got out my brand new bike and sorted all my lines ready for racing. The track this year didn’t change that much from last making practice a bit easier. The only new part of the track was the inside line on the first corner. It became apparent very quickly that if you weren’t on that line then you were going to get smashed. During practice we got a chance to practice gates which is normally just routine but this time the gate looked different. As soon as I got on the gate I realised what the difference was, it was so much steeper than usual. So steep in fact, people were sliding down the ramp, hitting the gate and struggling to get on their bikes. After practice we all had a quick refuel and something to eat during the break before racing started. Racing for me didn’t go quite as I had hoped. My motos didn’t go too badly, allowing me to go straight into the quarters. For my quarters and semis I had quite lucky picks and I got through those and into the A finals on both days which was good. However it was here where it all went down hill. In the finals there were a couple of guys I hadn’t raced against before during my motos so I wasn’t sure how it was all going to happen. Anyway out the gate I had a bad snap and was left for dead in third and didn’t have the power to catch up so there was nothing I could do but just follow on home in third. |

Caersws Cup RD2
A couple of weeks ago was the second round of the Cearsws Cup DH series. With Jamie out with an unfortunate injury “get well soon bro” it was only me flying the flag for Memento Mori. We rolled up on the Saturday morning and I did my usual routine of going to sign on and coming back to get changed and hit the uplifts. As I got to the top of the track I realised that they were using the old NPS track which is awesome nice and steep with some nice fast jumps at the end. Saturday practice went really well with the track staying nice and dusty due to the lovely weather, I was really enjoying myself and got plenty of runs in, this allowed me to have my lines pretty dialled. During the night we camped on site due to the nice weather and had a chat with all the crew. With no rain falling over night I woke up to another glorious day and was really looking forward to racing. A couple of runs in the morning set me up nicely for my race runs. My first race run went ok with me messing up my lines and not pedalling as much as I should have. I came down and ended up 4th which wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. After a short break and refuel I headed up for run 2. This run went better with me hitting all my lines and pedalling in all the spots I should. I crossed the line going 4 seconds faster, unfortunately that wasn’t enough to move me onto the podium which was disappointing.
Midlands Champs
Last weekend was the Pearce Cycles DH series RD2 which incorporated the Midlands Champs. This round was at Hopton Castle, a venue I had been to many times before, but I was in for a shock. They were using a track I didn’t even know existed and have never ridden but I am always up for a challenge! On Saturday morning the track was wet and slippy but was rapidly drying out making it really fun and fast to ride. For Sunday the weather changed dramatically making the track even wetter than Saturday morning. During the races run I crashed in both, meaning I was way off the pace and way down the results. All in all the weekend wasn’t the best I had ever had ,but I am putting it behind me and focusing on the NPS4X coming up this weekend.

OFFICIAL IDENTITI KRISIS MM09 |

|
|
It gives me great pleasure to introduce our 4X team bike, I give you the IDENTITI KRISIS MMO9.
After designing the website and setting out a colour scheme for the team, we looked into the possibility of creating a bike that was not only fast but also suitable to Memento Mori.
Speaking to our sponsor Identiti and major factor Matt from Ison we then set out creating the MM09.
For the 2009 season we were granted to change the colour and logo placement. I have personally relished working with Matt from ISON and Corin from www.dfourb.com. Matt saw the first design of the MM09 at the London Cycle Show last Autumn. Matt was impressed by the vision of the team and its direction.
MORE ON THE IDENTITI KRISIS MM09 |
I would personally like to thank Corin Wren and Jenny Wren from DfourB and Matt Andrews Sales Manager at Ison Distribution. Without their vision resource and energy I couldn't achieve this, so massive thanks from myself Nigel Jones Memento Mori Manager and the team Tom Knight, Liam Munn, and Jamie Maller.
